Allied Artists Fights Censorship - Video
PUBLISHED:  Dec 20, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
During heavy metal's heyday, a fringe group of moralists calling themselves the Parents Material Resource Center ("PMRC") fought to censor or rate records in the aftermath of a troubled youth's suicide, attributed to lyrics from an Ozzy Osbourne album. Calls to completely eradicate heavy metal or to enact strict censorship laws prohibiting certain lyrics in music were running ramped, spawning the PMRC. Allied Artists CEO and Chairman, Kim Richards (Pink Floyd, Renegade, Robbie Dupree, David Nauhton, Luis Cardenas, Kevin Dubrow), took to the airwaves with none other than Donny Osmond, to fight the PMRC's effort. Richards and Osmond appeared all over the country as well as before Congress fighting the effort. In the end, the PMRC compromised and the industry accepted "voluntary" warning labels, to be used at the individual record company's discretion. Had it not been for the efforts of Allied Artists, Kim Richards, Donny Osmond and many other industry luminaries who oppose censorship, the PMRC's efforts may well have changed history and curbed our First Amendment rights!
