MERLIN’S MUSIC BOX DEN PRESENTS Sugahspank! & the Swing Shoes Live

The Swing Shoes were formed in Athens in 2006. Initially a gypsy swing street guitar duo, they gradually evolved into a four piece, adding bass and drums. Nowadays they perform with a fifth member on harmonica.
At first their music followed the rules of the gypsy swing idiom, mixing Greek folk melodies, jazz standards, and several off-the-cuff numbers. Their covers – usually played at lightning-fast speed – were unpredictable, placing familiar tunes in a new context. After regular appearances in clubs and festivals all over Greece, their reputation as a live act grew.
Their first album “Ladies & Gents, HERE’S THE SWING SHOES” was released in 2010 and received rave reviews. A predominantly instrumental album of traditional and gypsy swing tunes, it included one track featuring Sugahspank!, marking the beginning of a long-term collaboration that continues to this day with explosive results.
Coming from a totally different musical background (hip hop), Sugahspank! is an artist who never stops experimenting. Together with the Swing Shoes, they explore many genres of black music, such as blues, soul, gospel, and swing.
In 2012, Sugahspank! & The Swing Shoes performed in front of thousands at the Athens Concert Hall Gardens. The following year they played the Kulturfestival Gräfelfing in Munich and appeared in Cyprus.
Their first collaborative album – titled “A Holy Show” and featuring mostly original material – was released in 2014. After playing more than 50 shows in 2015, they ended the year by opening the City of Athens’ 2016 New Year’s Eve festivities.
Currently, they are working on their second album together and continue to perform live all over Greece. Their music and live performances remain as driving and energetic as ever. The beat goes on….
