Mixing Hit Records - My Stereo Buss Chain with vintage outboard gear - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 09, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
This video shows the gear used on my stereo buss while I mix and (sometimes) master, with audio samples to compare the unprocessed and processed sound (24 bit 44.1 K).

I mix 'in the box', and love the benefits of doing that. But I, like most engineers, have to work a bit harder to make things sound as rich and musical ITB as compared to working in the analogue world. My own approach is to have some awesome-sounding analogue gear on my stereo buss to flavour and cook the sound while I'm mixing.

After trying out many different compressors and limiters on my stereo buss, I have settled on this; a pair of NTP 179-160s' and some Transmission Products broadcast amplifiers. Both are vintage and extremely rare, and I love mixing with them on the stereo buss because They make things sound very 'open' and clean like modern music should sound, yet it gives everything in the mix a slightly warm character that is similar to what an analogue console would do. Besides that, the mix is sounds tighter, fuller, smoother, punchier and deeper and a bit louder by simply putting it through this chain, even before I start mixing.

The song sample used in this demonstration is by AM Contra called "Heart Peripheral" from the Mixing Secrets For The Small Studio website. It is not mixed, and this video shows what it sounds like before and after being processed by my Stereo Buss Chain, to demonstrate how it can make artificial samples in electronic music sound more juicy, exciting and make the song more engaging to the listener.
