The piece shares the same name as the 1991 Jacques Rivette film. In the film a young painter’s girlfriend, Marianne, becomes a muse for another older and more famous painter who is struggling with an artistic block. Although this piece is not programmatic it reflects similar concepts as those found in the film – obsession, artistic beauty, depression, frustration and delicacy. Inspired by these concepts, musical elements take on an almost obsessive motivic development and unravel in a final dance.
