If you're looking for smooth, soulful hip hop with a hint of jazz, you won't find anyone better in Canada to suit your needs than Saskatoon, SK producer Factor. Chandalier is the ultimate culmination of a large number of collaborations and producer compilations that Factor has released recently on his own Sideroad Records imprint with the participation of the best and weirdest in Canada and California. For those familiar with Factor, Chandelier is more of the same, but the backing of American indie Fake Four Inc combined with some of the best work he has yet to produce means that this album could very well be Factor's break out album. The biggest name on this compilation-like album, Sadat X, is also the most straight forward emcee to make an appearance. On the other end of the spectrum are guest like Project Blowed vocal innovator Myka 9, who chops it up spoken word style over a sparse, soulful lullaby of a beat for Good Old Smokey (My Kanine); or Prairie rapper Epic, who drops a quick, quirky battle rap over a beautifully melancholy beat composed of drums, acoustic guitar, one piano key and some sing-song vocal samples with Year of the Rat; or Belgium's Nomad and Connecticut's Ceshi, both of whom merge their indie rock singing to Factor's more uptempo hip hop on Home Again and Pray, respectively. Resting in the middle are tracks by Awol One, Josh Martinez, Noah 23, Moka Only, Cam the Wizzard and more, as well as a few chill instrumental tracks. While you may not hear these tracks at your favourite club or booming out of car windows, Chandelier is likely to get plenty of play on the walkmans and iPods of those in the know, as well as providing a great soundtrack for many a smoke session.
