Speach Impediments, also known as S.I., are a hip hop group hailing from Orange County, California. What originally started as a group of friends who had a love for hip hop music, ended up turning into a group of individuals who would represent the S.I. name as a freestyle rap crew. They spent some time going to house parties and local functions getting into freestyle sessions and battles as a means of honing their craft. This later resulted in the official formation of what the group is today. The birth of the actual group came in the form of a sold-out show in the summer of 2003. The group is composed of rappers Drewid, Syntax Vernac, Freddie J, Deezie, and DJ Zole.
With well over 350 shows and performances, a catalog of over 40 recorded tracks from several releases, and an upcoming album in the final mixing phase, it is safe to say that Speach Impediments are ready to be the next big thing in independent hip hop. In a time of chaos and uncertainty, S.I. provides energy and clarity. A true breath of fresh air in these polluted airways; something new.
With cool-calm inspirational hooks over soulfull, hand-played piano riffs like those on “Keep Breathing”, to flavorfull, hard hitting lyrics displayed over raw drums and chopped samples on “Who You Playin?”, Speach Impediments provide every type of vibe and style that is true and original all to themselves, creating a brand which is represented by the intertwined SI logo tatooed on each member. The best part about S.I. is that they don’t appeal to just street and hip hop culture purists. They attract fans young and old, black and white, rich and poor, cool and nerdy, rockers and rappers, mainstream and underground. Their live performance is one not to be missed as it is full of energy, and the chemistry between them all combined on stage is almost magical, giving the viewer a true and authentic hip hop experience.
They have shared the stage with many of their own inspirations such as Talib Kweli, Lyrics Born, Dilated Peoples, Hieroglyphics, Canibus, Swollen Members, KRS-One, Kev Brown, and much more. They also have a song featuring the likes of Sabac Red (Non Phixion) on their upcoming album. Speach Impediments are currently unsigned, and are independently funding, producing, recording, mixing, promoting and distributing their own records and products.
