U2's Joshua Tree Tour: An Emotional Evening in Vancouver
The legendary band U2 inaugurated a series of more than 30 concerts in North America and Europe on Friday night at BC Place Stadium. A tour unlike any other that pays tribute to the 30th anniversary of the emblematic album The Joshua Tree released in March 1987.
A report by Anne-Diandra Louarn
Where The Streets Have No Name, With or Without You or I Still Have Found What I'm Looking For: First-time and nostalgic admirers have taken their ears for nearly two hours.
Some 40,000 people, from all generations, traveled for the occasion. Some like Jo Ahorro did not hesitate to camp in front of the stadium for four days to be front row. "It's the best band in the world, it's better to take this moment to the bottom before it's over," he told Radio-Canada's microphone.
Others have traveled hundreds of kilometers, like the Tardif family from Alberta. "We wanted this to be the first concert of our 9-year-old daughter," says Tamalyn Tardif, who was wearing a U2 t-shirt purchased on the Vertigo tour in 2006.
"We've seen them six times," says Gérald Tardif, "but tonight it was really exceptional and also nostalgic with all those old songs. We also got a new song to finish the concert. "The world's first novelty is" The Little Things That Give You Away ".
For the rest, U2 has, as promised, reviewed all the songs of The Joshua Tree, not forgetting his other great hits such as Sunday Bloody Sunday, One, Elevation or Beautiful Day.
A timeless melodies, guitar riffs always as catchy and of course a voice almost intact, that of Bono, which retains the same energy as in 1987. His fervent commitment and his political and social positions were also of the party: a Advocacy for the right of women, against the war in Syria and, of course, its opposition to Donald Trump tinted the show.
"The power of the people is much stronger than the people in power," said Bono in particular, before the crowd chanted the same words. "Canada is not closing its doors in a period of fear," he said.
Simone de Beauvoir, Joni Mitchell and Oprah Winfrey
The band also used a widescreen width-of-the-stage screen to broadcast a Western-style short film where the tricks of a liar named Mr. Trump are unveiled. " You are a liar! "Concludes one of the characters, as the first notes of the title Exit begin to resonate. A whole symbol!
The same screen, with close-ups of the four members of the group, was also used to project images of women advocates, such as Rosa Parks, Simone de Beauvoir and Alice Walker. Such as Joni Mitchell, Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Pussy Riot and Malala Yousafzai. Powerful images of ruins in Syria and refugee camps told by a young girl also caught attention.
A few words in French
Vancouver - a city that the Irish group knows well for having already rehearsed in 2005 and began its tour there in 2015 - was also entitled to a declaration of love from Bono, in French please : "Vancouver, my friend; Vancouver, my love, thank you! "
Opening group Mumford and Sons began their concert in front of a half-empty room, while thousands of admirers clustered in endless queues trying to enter the stadium. Many complaints from dissatisfied spectators, who also came to listen to the popular English band, quickly invaded the social networks.
The first set of the Joshua Tree 2017 tour at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.
Our four paddies have chosen to cut their concert into three parts, as follows.
Five emblematic tracks to begin, prior to the release of The Joshua Tree and appearing on the albums War and The Unforgettable Fire.
Not to forget, the icing on the cake, a surprise also size for this very first concert which ends with a new piece, unpublished, Extract of the next album and that we all call for our wishes for months! This song, "The Little Things That Give You Away", will likely feature on this new album, which could be called "A Song Of Experience".
