Biography

Following up their critically acclaimed 2006 album, “Free Alongside Ship” has proven to be no easy task, but the members of West Hollywood-based avant-pop band Shitting Glitter – now down to a duo – have expatiated upon their ‘angst meets kitsch’ theme to incorporate a broader palette of sounds and styles, all the while retaining their perceived political prowess and sense of social activism.

Take the current single, “Socially Activist,” with its menacing, hypnotic introduction that breaks into a growling guitar and droning drumbeats. The ironic lyrics suggest placing a premium on apathy, in a time when young people are coming of age in a hyper-political world of bloggers, protestors, and talking points.

Experimenting with a new approach, the band has already released four songs from their forthcoming third album, “Open For Business,” as a suite of digital downloads. Two more suites of four songs will be released, along with some exclusive bonus tracks, culminating in the issuance of the complete 12-track album on CD sometime in 2009.

After releasing a dance-inspired EP of remixes (Solar City’s club mix of “Slut Buffet” receiving considerable attention), remakes, and rarities entitled “Sidesaddle Sweet Talk,” the band began recording sessions at Seamonster Sounds in Malibu with producer Hoagie Hill (Seattle's Naught, Mia Boyle, Congo Norvell, L.A.'s infamous Blue Daisies, Orchestra of Excited Strings). Adding in live drums, piano, percussion, layers of vocals, and several sessions of all-out musical cacophony created by a group of the band’s non-musician friends, the band has supplemented it’s original sound considerably, leaving behind labels like “80’s” and “electroclash” hastily slapped on the band’s previous releases.

Always open to working in a variety of genres, the tracks “Legalese” and “I’m A Vampire (Featuring Rich N. Famous)” find the band in more rock-oriented territory than ever before, and the lush, orchestral “The Collection” includes an instrumental coda that is haunting in it’s simplicity.

“Open For Business” is available online at www.shittingglitter.com; all of the band’s catalog is available from Amazon.com, CDBaby.com, and worldwide from iTunes.

History

Shitting Glitter played their first show at the now-defunct Jox in North Hollywood back in December 2001. At that time the band, were fairly inexperienced but full of ideas and ambition. The band was founded by Amy and Devin, as well as Von Edwards, who continues to lend his artistic and creative abilities to the band in many ways including creating the artwork for the album "Free Alongside Ship" and contributing to the track "Grady", and co-directing music videos for the band such as "The Curse" and "Mustache Rides 5¢" (the latter co-directed with Jessica Lawless, Edward's partner).

The band has played over 150 shows, including Reykjavik Gay Pride, LA Gay Pride (and pride festivals in Albuquerque, Santa Barbara, San Diego, LA Valley, and more), Folsom Street Fair; toured the west coast; and performed in New York city for the Queer Media and Entertainment Conference.

Their songs have appeared in independent films including John Venturini's "Succubus" on Jennifer Corday's Breast Cancer Benefit CD "Venus Envy: Women Who Rock" and have performed live on the Q Television Network.
