evensong calls
as the long shadows fall
crawl from platform to train
try in vain, seize dimming day
fill your glass before it drains away

home, cloistered room
sulphur sound pierces gloom
song of laughter and life, calling
come take thee outside
come now meet and greet the rising tide

beached, we collide
between gasps we confide
tell tall tales in small hours
become beer- bold, ale- empowered
then punch- drunk, whiskey- soured

there's no truth in wine
we sing the same old lines
though sometimes we forget
and stumble off the set

come see us on the town
florid troupe of clowns
slapdash fights on cue

nightclub queues with piss- splashed shoes
beggars choose whilst buggers cruise
stench of sweat, cider breath
lurch and limp towards a little death

see me in my cups (can you help me please?)
see i've had enough (lost and ill at ease)
to tire of myself (look for someone else)
to dredge each dank and darkened place (not quite sure how i got here)
searching for a friendly face (missed my stop again, i fear)
to be known, and be shown (lost again)
that I'm not alone, so far from home

therefore i say unto you
to thine lies and blights be true
lay ye down with dogs in heat
wake to rain on unknown streets
close thine eyes for when in doubt
lose light, let there be blackout
choose illusion
sleep
