In this video I'm demonstrating an extremely authentic djembe, the 10" Water Rhythm Series Original African Rope Tuned Djembe by Meinl Percussion. This drum is cut from a single solid piece of mahogany, and the artistic etching gives it a great look. Following tradition, this drum has a goatskin head and a Mali-Weave rope tuning system.

If you're not familiar with tuning a Mali-Weave djembe, Meinl includes an instructional pamphlet that shows you how to do it. It's relatively simple once you try it out - tuning the drum head to a higher pitch involves adding some knots to increase tension on the ropes. And while you'll probably like the sound of the drum right out of the box, you can also tune it up surprisingly high.

The ropes are made from pre-stretched nylon, which means you won't have to worry too much about your drum going out of tune. Out of the box this djembe has a nice warm sound, with a great snap and excellent definition. The sustain is just right, and overall this drum sounds exactly like you'd expect a great djembe to sound.
