Gene Simmons has opened his mouth again, this time stating that rock is dead. Here's the thing, he's not totally wrong.

Rock music is in a period of dire straits here in 2014. Its appeal feels like a novelty that shined on a previous generation. Even with huge bands on the landscape (The Black Keys, Foo Fighters, and even *gasp* Nickelback) the overall idea feels recycled and elderly. The angst seems gone and replaced by nothing more than angry sounding vocals, which, by the way, is far from the same thing. Attitude can be accomplished and achieved without screaming/singing/growling or doing whatever the hell the latest trendy post-punk or whatever band is doing.

But we are to blame, too. As rock fans, we aren't demanding the music enough. We bitch and whine about how rock feels distant in 2014, but we just stand or sit around and do nothing to change it. We don't call and demand our favorite songs, or petition for the rock stations to reach a wider range. We don't try new rock bands just because its something new or different. Fans of rap, pop, country and metal do that, they're passionate about the genre. Why don't rock fans do that anymore?

Gene wasn't totally correct, rock still has spirit, which insists that there's still life to rock music. But spirit alone isn't enough. It feels like rock is on life support, in need of resuscitation. But it won't revive itself. Rock FANS need to do that. So its time to show, once again, why rock is the most dominant force that music has ever seen.
