Robert Farnon's Grammy-winning arrangement of "Lament" (m - J.J. Johnson, w - David Speed) - Video

DESCRIPTION:
[NOTE! The words superimposed in this video r my own, not the existing Meredith D'Ambrosio lyric; both r displayed below. The audio is, of course, strictly the original instrumental track.] From Johnson's 1995 CD, "Tangence," a long overdue collaboration between the celebrated trombonist/composer-arranger and one of his longtime inspirations, Robert Farnon (described in Johnson's liner notes as both ''one of my composer/orchestrator heroes for as long as I can remember" and - quoting Stravinsky re Ravel - one who "orchestrates with the precision of a Swiss watchmaker"), comes this gorgeous Grammy-winning arrangement, which, combined with the composer's presence as featured soloist, results in arguably the definitive version of Johnson's oft-recorded composition. At the very least, it's in the ballpark w/ the legendary Gil Evans/Miles Davis version, circa 1957.

Below is displayed my alternate lyric, as seen in the video.
Beneath each line is displayed the corresponding line from the original lyric, added by Meredith D'Ambrosio in 1990.

Sometimes when I wake up
(We kissed in the sunlight)
I can't go
(We were young)
Back to sleep again
(And so much in love)
I can't fall that deep again
(But time stole the sun from me)
Every time I think that I'm away
(Once we dreamed the world was ours alone)
Home free
(To share)
Who do I think I've been fooling?
(How could that dream disappear?)
It's plain to see just what's ruling me.
(Will every word be forgotten?)

Lately it's been cold out
(Now Heaven's behind us)
Makes me long
(This lament)
For that healing touch
(Will it go away?)
Lately it's too real, too much
(I hope time will set me free)

Every time I think that I'm with you
(Maybe someday just beyond a dream)
I wake up and start it all
(Gentle love will come and then)
Over again from "I do."
(Bring back the sunshine to me.)
