RIK & THE PIGS - Life's A Bust - Video
PUBLISHED:  Aug 20, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
Well, it’s about goddamn time I got around to this.

If you haven’t already heard of Rik and his bad bunch of Pigs, go ahead and slap yourself on the wrist because that’s a major blow to your punk cred—and while you’re at it, you might as well slap me on the wrist too, because I’ve been putting off on posting this band for-fucking-ever. For months on top of months, practically ever since I first nabbed this group’s debut tape back in early 2015 (https://rikandhispigs.bandcamp.com/album/demo). I don’t even remember where I got that tape: I’m aware that it was released by Lumpy Rex—a label that’s operated by Lumpy & The Dumpers’ front-man, Martin Meyer (I know that’s obvious to most of you, but since there’s so many punk-newcomers flocking to my channel lately, I figure that it’d help to elaborate on small things like that)—but I’m not sure if it was actually sold on the Lumpster’s online distro or not. Did I buy it? Did I trade for it? Or did it just somehow materialize in my tape collection? I can’t recall in the slightest, but all I know is that tape’s a real jammer, and I still periodically pop it in my deck just so “Leather Gloves” and “I’m So Bored” can rattle my walls a little bit more.

So, if I like Rik & the Pigs so much, then why haven’t I covered them on my channel already? Good question. I mean, there’s a lot of things that I can feasibly pin the blame on, like how a ton of other people have covered Rik’s material already (albeit track-by-track, as opposed to the full releases), or that I’m an idiot with zero retention, but I’ll stuff it and spare you from my inadequacies. All that matters is that Rik n’ The Pigs have finally found their way up on the channel, after months of procrastination—and if I’m gonna be honest here, it’s not even on my own accord, exactly. Yesterday afternoon, I received a Facebook message request from a guy named Andy Puig, which was a name that I remember from Lumpy’s second mixtape (being the person who wrote the opening track, “Matter of Time”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGYw9G64SMw). But, to my surprise, it wasn’t Andy who was contacting me: it was Erik “Ricky” Meyer of Rik & the Pigs. He told me that he didn’t have a Facebook account of his own, and was instead using his friends’ login information to get in touch with me. He asked if I could upload Rik & the Pigs’ material to my channel—as he couldn’t do it himself since he’s “not good at computers”—including an all-new 7” that was coming out the next day. That’s what you’re listening to right now.

Now, I was under the impression that he just wanted that new record up on my channel. Nope, Ricky was talkin’ bout the whole shebang: that includes his debut demo tape (back then, Rik & the Pigs was just a solo-project made by Ricky himself), “Pig Sweat b/w Feed The Animal” (a 7” released by Total Punk Records: https://rikandhispigs.bandcamp.com/album/pig-sweat-b-w-feed-the-animal), “Volume II” (a tape released by Chapel of Crimes: http://errydawghashisday.blogspot.com/2016/05/rik-pigs-volume-ii-cs.html), along with two new 7”s that are set to be released later this year. Now, I’m typically against dumping whole discography’s worth of material from a single band all at once, but the way I see it, this is a perfect opportunity to make up for my prolonged procrastination—plus I fucking love Rik & the Pigs. I’m uploading the group’s new 7” today, as it’d make sense to upload the group’s most-pertinent record the same day it’s released, with the remaining three releases set to be uploaded once I get through the current list of requests that I have to deal with. This is all just a cool turn of events to me, to have Ricky contact me to share his music when I very well would’ve done it on my own behalf; it’s a hell of a lot more than I’ve ever heard from his younger brother, “Lumpy” at least (the closest thing I’ve gotten about him acknowledging my existence was on the backside of Lumpy & The Dumpies’ “Huff My Sack” LP, which read as such: “A hot saggy nutsack slap in the face to all social media and anyone on the internet that has ever talked or written about this band. I didn’t authorize any of that—fuckin’ jam it”). Oh yeah, Ricky is Marty’s older brother, in case you weren’t already aware of that.
