Londonderry Air - PER GADE, Trombone Solo. Manila 1984

THIS TUNE IS WELL KNOWN ALL OVER THE WORLD. In this case Per Gade used it as a encore solo piece for trombone in his own concerts, after performing all the big difficult classical trombone concertos.
The arrangement done for the same brass instruments as used in the symphony orchestra: Trumpets, French horns, Trombone and tuba.

HISTORY: Londonderry Air is an "air" (music form) that originated from the County "Londonderry" in Ireland. It is popular among the Irish people and is very well known throughout the world. It is also called "DANNY BOY".
This "air" was collected by a Jane Ross from the town in Northern Ireland Limavady.It was published by the Society for the Preservation and Publication of the Melodies of Ireland in a 1855 book "The Ancient Music of Ireland". The tune was listed as an anonymous air, with a note attributing its collection to Jane Ross of Limavady.
"AIR" and the meaning of the word: (Italian: "aria"/ French:, "ayr" or "ayre". Is a variant of "the musical song form" and the name of various "song-like vocal or instrumental compositions".

PER GADE..., AND WHY THIS TUNE FOR ENCORE?
One day in Asia someone took a discussion with Per Gade on music. The man was convinced that great technique and fast notes was most important to be able to do a great performance on the trombone.
Per Gade insisted that "the development" of musicality and the sense of how to perform music the right way was "a must do" for any musician. A performer must "tell stores" for the audiences", make them feel something; technique and mechanical skills are second or third of importance in music. Technique is only something required to master a instrument and to play it well, not the goal itself!"

- Londonderry Air is a slow song with no difficult technique (except the very high notes). One have to play music to be able to make it interesting to listen to for the audiences. Only to mark he is mastering the of technique of the instrument as well as embouchure for the highest possible notes, Per Gade is doing a small INTRO with technical skills up to high D, as well as a CODA at the end, ending with a lip slur up of the tone F, in 4 octaves up to the very high F on 1st. slide position, which very few trombone players can go (to slur four octaves up).

This old Betamax recoding was found recently and almost faded away in the picture, but the sound is intact.

Performed together with fine Philippino musicians in Manila, for a special concert at CCP (Cultural Centre of the Philippines) at Roxas Boulevard, Metro Manila, August 1984.
This was a encore pieces in the concert, after finishing a complete concert on 3 hours, with brass and wood wind instruments on stage. One moment Per Gad had to play trombone, the next moment he had to conduct, and so on.

This is a rare cut of Per Gade's cunducting.
In general he was always in and out on the stage in his different shows and concerts all over Asia, one moment to play trombone solo, or in ensembles, the next moment conducting. That was his show..., somehow exhausting and difficult, some people might say.

This encore piece was a opportunity to show some of the woodwind and brass players from CCP in the Philippines, before closing down the concert.
