On his latest CD, Paul Adams's Native American flutes conjure a transforming, shamanistic experience that will transport you to another time and place.

This is challenging music as it makes you focus on the center of your being and prepares you for a mystical journey into your heart, soul, and mind – the "heavens" of your inner self, if you will.

Adams's compositions and performances channel the sanctity and solemnity of the very source that inspires his choice of main instrument and this recording. In addition to Native American flutes, Adams uses various instruments to help paint a portrait of the people and culture of this land in the times before the arrival of the European settlers.

The percussion on one of the tracks sounds like a muted, barely audible gong that marks long stretches of time. It's very ritualistic and conveys the effect of a liturgy of the ancients. Also, rich keyboard/synthesizer textures make it seem like Adams is conjuring ethereal spirits.

Adams's flute playing is very appropriate to the style and purpose of the music. The melodies are hesitant and searching, yet every note is carefully chosen and constructed. Tracks like "Into the Deep Blue" in particular exemplify the penetrating and transcendental nature of the music. On the other hand, Adams wraps up the album with the jazzy "The Sky of Hope," which almost feels like a celebratory culmination of a religious experience.

Heavens is effective on several levels – as background music; for catharsis, therapy, and healing; and for focused meditation. It's also a perfect showcase for Adams's compositional and performance talents and for the Native American flute as a hypnotic conduit for the cultivation of musical dreams.

La medicina perfecta hecha música!.
Heavens es el octavo lanzamiento del flautista y artista, Paul Adams. Una agradable mezcla de instrumentos étnicos (vientos y percusiones nativas de Norteamérica) con sonidos de la naturaleza y de sintetizadores. Una música perfecta para la sanación y la meditación, tranquila y profunda. Diez temas que persiguen, como principal objetivo aliviar al alma, buscando una vía de escape para alejar cualquier preocupación o malestar que invada al oyente.

"Dreamtime" es la pista que abre el CD, más de siete minutos de profundo bienestar y sosiego. La flauta nativa de Paul posee un sonido dulce y cálido, reproduciendo una melodía que invita a un placido sueño. Es la sensación de estar flotando y caer en el mundo, despacio, entre vaivenes, al igual que una pluma. Qué delicia!.

"In A Zen Garden" es un solo de flauta misteriosa. En ocasiones, un golpe suave de campanillas surge para llamar la atención del oyente que se encuentra inmerso en un estado de calma absoluto. Un música perfecta para momentos de reflexión y evasión. Me gusta!.

"Into The Deep Blue" es la pieza más extensa de todo el CD, casi ocho minutos. La base de sintetizadores y demás sonidos electrónicos crean un fondo musical bellísimo para la flauta de Paul. La música es relajante y a su vez descriptiva, llevando a la mente bellas imágenes naturales, paisajes... Un viaje fascinante!.

"Whippoorwill" es mi preferida. Un comienzo de sonidos ambientales nocturnos y de animales abren este tema. Es increíble como simplemente un dúo de flautas nativas americanas, percusiones esporádicas y el continuo sonido ambiental crean una de las piezas más misteriosas y bellas de todo el CD, manteniendo expectante en todo momento al oyente.

En "The Ancients" sólo se mantienen un delicado toque continuo de campanillas "sweet dreams" que permanecen de principio a fin, una base musical poco común pero idónea en esta pista, que se intercala con algunos sonidos acústicos casi imperceptibles. Nuevamente, una música profunda y misteriosa, pero realmente hipnótica y hermosa.
