DESCRIPTION:
“Ironically, It’s a Giraffe” is the third track on my first album, “Heart Like Stained Glass”, and second track off my second album, “Freshman Year” that I released during my sophomore year of college in 2008. Also known to my parents and some of my friends as my ‘beat boxing song’, this was always one of my favorite songs to perform. I would beat box in the beginning and then again during the bridge during live shows.

The version of this song on "Freshman Year" is a full band version where I also play bass, and a friend plays drums.

I started writing this song at the dentist’s office, specifically, in the waiting room. The things you remember right? The inspiration for this song comes from a late night that turned into an early morning in a hotel room with friends during a choir and band trip my sophomore year of high school. There was a girl that hung out with us all night and all weekend, and I started to develop a crush on her throughout the trip. We flirted constantly, I felt inspired to write a song, that’s all that happened.

The title of the song comes from when this girl and I were walking through the zoo on our band/choir trip and she told me her favorite animal was a Giraffe. I found this funny, endearing, and ironic because of how short she was.

One of my favorite aspects about this song is the subtle key change during the breakdown where I rap the bridge. It’s unique among my other songs because of its fast tempo, the use of so much palm-muting (a strumming technique), and the overall vibe.

I re-recorded it for my second album, “Freshman Year” but added a bass line (performed by me), and drums to give it a full band feel.
