Soul Brothers Six - I Don't Wanna Cry - Fine Records - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 24, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
Without the facility of Google, In 1998 the three foremost authorities on Soul vocal-group 45’s published a book “Soul Harmony Singles”. Jeff Beckman, Jim Hunt & Tom Kline’s 3 guys who had dedicated their lives in the pursuit of Soul vinyl, in the trenches, in the field, not at a keyboard in their kitchen. That is why today, their book is considered by seasoned cratediggers as the “Bible” of the Soul-vocal-group discography.
Continually referenced by all serious Soul collectors, as it’s contents, were researched & compiled by three of the world’s most experienced and respected collectors, a reliable and totally thorough discography from hard-earned experience and collector net-working, the old fashioned way, face to face, by phone or mail. So when we encounter a 45, by a well-established Soul band and their is no reference to it existing within it’s pages in 1998, this 45s serious-rarity in that time is unquestionable.
So here we have a 1966, first 45 for this six man gathering who provided the Soul Collecting scene with fully 10 or more top-drawer Soul-45s to chase.
We shall lead with the topside because it is an impressively raw Northern Soul dancer, seemingly inspired by Don Norman’s nationwide dance-hit “Cool Jerk” still a Soul-Club staple to this day. Listen to John Ellison, Moses, Charles & Sam Armstrong along with Vonnelle Benjamin & lead singer Lester Peleman dance-craze offering to Rochester, New York, which obviously received no DJ support whatsoever. The Brothers “Cool Jerk” styled dancer died an instant death…falling into ultimate obscurity.
For me an even greater treasure lies hidden on the flipside, a recording Mr Hunt, Beckman & Kline i’m pretty sure would have been totally blown them away by, if it popped up in a box, at a record fair…. a seamless vocal-harmony stroller dripping with all the elements the vocal-group stalker hopes to hear within the grooves of a ‘new’ find.
An utterly absorbing display of grown-man-despair as the silky “I Don’t Wanna Cry” chorus is unashamedly punctured by desperate squeals, beseeching high notes from a man on his knees, begging not to be forgotten by his love.
Low Rider, Carib-Soul and the growing Northern Soul Sunday afternoon movement towards, spinning exceptional Music, will be taking notice of this seldom available listing, as well as those Northern Soul collectors dedicated to owning the New dance floor offerings.
A fabulously Soulful 45, that was widely unknown to exist until more recent times..or of course if you use google and discover a CD compilation, I’m not absolutely certain but I got a feeling discovering CD’s was very low in the priorities of mr. Hunt, Kline & Beckman, we applaude their knowledge, diligence and dedication compliling an authoritive book from their first-hand experiences…
A book that reflects the rarity in the real-world of digging for records..
