Nicolas Magriel plays Rag Vediki Lalit on sarangi accompanied by Yousuf Ali Khan on tabla - Video

DESCRIPTION:
From Guria Concert at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, London, July 2010. The video is in two parts. This part includes alap and most of the vilambit tintal section. Part two includes the end of the vilambit section, the drut section in which I play a khyal composed by Dilip Chandra Vedi Vedi "nainavaa ki tira", and jhala.

This is the first concert I ever gave with a left foot pointing at the audience (due to a bad hip), discreetly veiled in a silk scarf. Vediki Lalit is a rare raga which Vediji composed and showcased at the 1934 All India Music Conference before either Shivranjani or Kalavati had trickled into Hindustani music from the South, but some listeners hear it as a mixture of these two rags. The chalan is complex. Vediji saw it as an evening answer to Lalit. The consecutive semitones steps between Re, komal Ga and shuddh Ga in some way mirror the Ga, Ma, tivra Ma configuration of Lalit.

This video was filmed from quite a distant seat in the hall on a dinky little still camera.
