Roland Peachey & His Royal Hawaiians - South Sea Lullabies - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 29, 2010
DESCRIPTION:
Excellent slide guitar tune from the Goodbye Hawaii EP (Decca Records DFE 6161). This was recorded in the late '40s I think. The record itself would have been issued in the mid to late '50s. It's hard to find any information on Roland Peachey, other than that he was active in England during WWII.

From the slightly patronising liner notes:

"The image of Hawaiian music is one of graceful and restful living on a sun-bathed island, with the kind and friendly inhabitants seemingly untroubled by the affairs of the world. There can certainly have been no other people who have retained their long-established way of life with the same degree of success as these kindly, hospitable inhabitants of Hawaii. Their music has the charm and poise which one might expect from a race who continue to take life calmly and who retain a dignity which has won the admiration of visitors from all parts of the world.

"As is so often the case with music of superficial simplicity, the actual performances within the style are extremely complex and in fact only a few very talented artists succeed in gaining a wide recognition without destroying the intrinsic beauty of the form. Roland Peachey has been one of the most popular bandleaders to feature the style of Hawaiian music. His orchestrations have a sympathy rare in popular music form and one can sense that everything Roland has recorded is the work of a sincere and talented musician.

"The record will provide for British listeners an illustration of hearing Hawaiian music at its best. The sides in the album reveal a very representative cross-section of Roland Peachey's talents; talents which make him a pre-eminent personality in the field. Extreme care has been taken to ensure that each selection receives the most fitting treatment. A musical idiom very often is a better illustration of a people's life and attitude than any set of books dealing with anthropology. In the warmth and restful beauty of these recordings Roland Peachey cannot fail but win new admirers for the romantic and friendly islands of Hawaii."
