Rubbish Music by Alfie Gidley & Russell Yates 2012-13 - Video

DESCRIPTION:
"An article that can be put to any use whatever is not rubbish. It only becomes rubbish if we lack the imagination or the enterprise to see and exploit its possible use." ~John A. Brune

The 'Rubbish Music' project attempts to reveal the true value of homemade instruments. We aimed to take recycled acoustic instruments away from the stereotyped confines of percussion-centred junk bands and bring them up to speed with the contemporary music scene in Cornwall.

From the outset, we posed ourselves a question:

Is it possible to evoke the Cornish landscape in music, using only what people throw away in Cornwall?

From October to November 2012, we sought out broken and unwanted items in our local area and, using only our basic knowledge of sound-creation principles, fashioned complete junk into a diverse array of musical instruments. The aim was to build ourselves a full, functional ensemble, replete with melody, percussion, bass, and chordal instruments.

Then, in December of the same year, we created the music video you see before you. The piece is in four movements; The Sea, The Beach, The Town and The Alley. It is the on-going story of Cornwall's famously quaint coastal towns as told by the wretched voices of Cornwall's waste.
