Kalyan Pathak's Jazz Mata Trio
'Transformative Raga and Jazz'

'Jazz Mata', is a musical concept (from a trio to a 12 piece band) that is transformative Raga, Jazz and Blues deeply rooted in compositional as well as improvisational aspects of Indian music and American jazz. Kalyan Pathak, tabla, drumset and percussion player, leads an energetic group that engages its audiences with new global music which fuses spoken rhythms, folkloric melodies and jazz harmony with masterful improvisation, realized as one exciting and moving experience.

As a composer, Kalyan is interested in creating music in which the rules of Indian raga and the complexity of its rhythmic language inform jazz harmony and syncopation, and vice-versa. Kalyan finds that by bridging the fundamental principles of jazz and Indian music, and by creating a compositional meeting place where elements of languages of both forms of music reflect off each other, musicians of Jazz Mata are advancing the cross-cultural conversation; let the accents fly.

From chants in the ancient language of Sanskrit, to medieval songs in Hindi; from poems of Tagore to folkloric dance songs, Jazz Mata develops it all with polyphonic ensemble playing and improvisatory structures, resulting in melodic richness and harmonic discoveries for Jazz Mata's new repertoire in blues and modal jazz.

Kalyan's hypnotic grooves, command of Tala rhythms, blend of world percussion and complex syncopation of drumset blend into one seamless rhythmic language that elevates the role of jazz drummer to a whole new level.
