The 12 Tube Amps Comparison: A pretty CRANKED & DIRTY Shootout. - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 28, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
PLEASE READ ALL THE BELOW BEFORE YOU POST COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS:

Every aspect of recording each amp was painstakingly done as much the SAME as possible for COMPARISON purposes. The idea is to hear how they vary from each other without giving any amp an advantage. The sounds may not suit your tastes, but they are as intended. If you are only into modern overdrive or Fender guitar sounds, these amps may not sound good to you, but at least you can compare them to each other. Feel free to send me your Plexi, Orange, Hiwatt, or Mesa and I will make a video comparing them, but I don't own them so I could not included them.

THIS IS THE PRETTY CRANKED (distorted) COMPARISON, CHECK THE PRETTY CLEAN SHOOTOUT IF THAT'S WHAT YOU PREFER. This comparison is intentionally not clean. This comparison is all about revealing the raw sounds, limitations, and unique character in each amp.

There are also individual videos of each amp played solo and with a band for comparison.

A '61 Gibson LP/SG was played with bridge PU, a Shure SM57 was right up to the amp cloth, about 1-2 inches off-center of the speaker (which is the most time-tested standard way to close-mic record a guitar amp I know of) to insure as little room sound as possible. An Apogee Duet A-D converter was used into Garage Band. A Boss Loop Station captured and replayed the guitar performance to insure that the same performance was used with every amp, every instance, no subtle variations. No effects or compression were added or used at any point. The amp EQs were all at 5 or whatever the middle was in most cases. Each recording was volume balanced as closely as possible for comparison. Each amp is heard for 34 seconds. The flubbiness and/or distortion you hear is from the amp, and revealing flub was part of the intention of the comparison! If anything, the recorded sounds is tighter than the room sound. The close mic placement, gain structure, and recording technique is standard, used on most recordings you've heard.

The guitar performance is meant to be simple, loose, and low-key, using varying positions to reveal the amp sound. Please don't waste our time with any criticism of the guitar playing. It's pointless. This could have been done a million different ways. It is meant to be a comprehensive and informative Gibson SG playing (mostly vintage Fender) tube amps comparison and is something that was not previously available like this. You may never read this and may complain about how I did it, but all of these amp recordings were done THE SAME and with FLAT EQ, hence COMPARISON.

Thanks for listening. Consider being kind and/or constructive in your comments. Mean, nasty, and/or ranty comments will be deleted (unless they are entertaining). Some people use this video to learn about what amps they prefer, others just want to say it should have been done they way they think is best. No matter how this was done, some are going to want it to be different. This video came out exactly the way it was intended to and fulfills the purpose of comparing these amps.

May 2015 Update:
The new quiver of amps: Silver Face Vibrolux, Princeton Reverb II, Champ II, a Black Face Bassman, and a Mahaffay Little Lanilei 3350LT on the way (I no longer have any of the amps in this video). It only makes sense to do an comparison 2 using the exact same techniques, but wow, so many haters! Not very inspiring...

Thank you to all who read my title and description and actually understood what I was going for and delivered and were able to benefit from it!
