Mikey Galactic crashed landed into the music scene in 2004 with the DVD release of the "Bikini Bandits Save Christmas" starring Maynard James Keenan (Tool/A Perfect Circle) and Schooly D (Godfather of Gangsta Rap). The Movie featured the songs "F*ck Christmas" and "Kwanzaa" written and preformed by Mikey Galactic. Since than Mikey had fallen off the radar until now
Mikey Galactic's debut release Live at the Raven Lounge is a collection of heartwarming acoustic love ballads by one of the better singer-songwriters in Philadelphia Okay well not exactly. Mikey may be one of the better song-smiths around, but love ballads to Mikey Galactic means lamenting about girls that "fuck everyone but me" and blowing his brains out "all over the pictures of you." And when he isn't singing misbegotten love songs to ballooning floozies, he saves a few odes for drugs like Cocaine and PCP. Think Steven Lynch with a dirtier mouth. Nothing is left untouched. Sodomy, fellatio, camel toes, cunnilingus, bestiality, and penetration are reoccurring themes in the solo set list. If this was a course in modern sexuality, the album would have to be advanced placement.
Live at the Raven Lounge is a fast-paced fuck-word fest that will definitely induce laughter – Although it's the kind of humor that you may not want others to know you're laughing at. Play this album and indeed someone listening will be offended. And that's the goal. Mikey Galactic challenges the listener to open the more cynical side of their minds and find something to laugh at in the dark world of modern sexuality and drug-infused good times. MG brings a dagger-tongued hip hop sensibility to his lyrics and the songwriting is excellent. The wordplay is strong and his imagery is vivid. Each song is a story that can only be told by someone who must have lived through this. The interplay between Mikey and the live crowd makes for a fun album. The only studio track, "Penetration" is a Bloodhound Gang-esque rap that doesn't at all sound out of place amidst the acoustic set. You'll find yourself studying his tracks to catch the rapid fire punch lines lacing the whole album. Still, while offending your smutty overweight little sister, MG's musical sensibilities manage to shine through. One love song, "Never Say Goodbye" is quite a departure from the Dionysian spirit of the rest of the set. It's the song that your little sister will like at first, but as soon as she thinks everything is sweet and pretty, his dark comedy strikes back with an ending one-liner that is certain to piss her off. Hiding behind the raunchy, fast paced debauchery of Live at the Raven Lounge are well crafted acoustic pop songs that are just as melodic as they are offensive. It's the kind of album that 13-year-olds hide from their parents and parents hide from their 13-year-olds. Definitely worth the listen, even if you have to roll up the windows in traffic or put the ear buds on …so the fat chicks you offend don't eat you.
