DESCRIPTION:
Week 11 of a series I'm calling "52 Licks." 1 new jazz phrase each week for 2013.
This phrase comes from Greg Hutchinson. He plays it on an uptempo arrangement of "Smile" off of Michael Karn's album, "In Focus."
Here's a link to download the PDF of the lick:

Compared to some of the previous licks, this one is a bit more challenging to play at a bright tempo and will require a little more work to get it down. But what's the fun in just throwing you guys softballs all day??
Think of the longer phrase in separate events:
1 - the 6 stroke phrase (variation on an inverted double stroke roll)
2 - the alternating 8ths
3 - the paradiddle with the ending accents
The brain learns things like this more efficiently if it can think of 3 things, not 26 consecutive eighth notes.
Good Luck!
