"If I Could Only Fly" was written by Blaze Foley (AKA XXX Dunbar) and recorded by Merle Haggard in 2000. "Blaze", a Texan and good friend of Townes Van Zandt, claimed euphemistically that he was the son of Red Foley and Blaze Starr. Always a character and a bit of a charlatan, he was murdered by a "friend" who got off Scott-free.
