Mariano Otero was born in Avellaneda, Buenos Aires, Argentina, on March 22nd. 1976. Son of a musician, he grew familiarized with several instruments, and occasionally received piano and guitar lessons. His background with the electrical bass starts at the age of 15, and later on he studies double bass and cello. After assisting to studies on several schools, he graduates on Contemporary Music School, and obtains a scholarship from Berkeley College of Music from Boston, and another from Amsterdam Conservatory, both through auditions. In New York he took lessons in bass and composition with Scott Colley and Mark Helias.
He starts to work as a professor on the Contemporary Music School, and becomes one of the new wave jazz musician reference in Argentina. On 2001, he's been chosen as Revelation Bass Player for one of the most important newspaper of the country, and his projects begin to raise the interest of critics and the audience. He also participates outside jazz in several orchestras dedicated to tango, and in musical comedies. Continuously creating original music projects, on 2002 he creates a seven-player band, with whom he registers his first CD on 2003, named "A Través" ("Through"), which is claimed by the specialized press, and chosen best record of the year by the newspaper "La Nación". He's also nominated to Clarín Award, as Revelation Jazz Artist, and pre-selected for Carlos Gardel's awards for Best Record. On 2004, he tours through New York and Miami, leading his five-player band, with whom he records for S-Jazz of EMI a new record called "D-Forma".
On 2005, he starts to write music for big band, project that gave him the possibility to be recognized as "Best Jazz Musician of the Year" and "Best big band".
2006 finds him close to present his third record as leader, named "Tres" for S-Music Company, to be released on September 18th.
Nowadays he's making a tour of performances with the Orchestra, based on the release of his new CD. The album release had great impact on the local jazz scene and media. He's been selected to play on Coliseo Theater of Buenos Aires, Argentina, as supporting band of Dave Holland's tour arriving on September 2006. To launch the album, he made a series of concerts with his orchestra in La Trastienda Club for three months.
He works actively in shows and recordings with the most well-known jazz players of the musical environment.
In December, he was awarded a Premio Clarín to the "best jazz artist", and he was chosen "best jazz musician" by the newspaper La Nación, for the second consecutive year. "Tres" was also selected as "best jazz album" of 2006 by the prestigious Rolling Stone magazine.
On 2007, he presented a new series of concerts in La Trastienda Club during April, and works actively in a national and international tour. He's been selected to play on Teatro Opera of Buenos Aires, Argentina, as supporting band of Dave Douglas Quintet tour arriving on October 2007.
In November 2007, he present his four record as leader, named "Cuatro" for S-Music Company. In December, he was chosen "Best composer" by the newspaper La Nación, and he was nominated to Clarín Award, as Best Jazz Artist. ro" was nominated to Gardel Award, as Best Jazz Album.
