Recorded September 27, 1939, for Columbia in New York, on 78-rpm matrices XCO 25390 through XCO 25394. Issued in December, 1939, as Masterworks Set M-388 (records 69745-D through 69747-D), and in slide automatic sequence as AM-388 (records 69748-D through 69750-D). A drop automatic version appeared the next year, MM-388 (records 70057-D through 70059-D). The Quartet takes five sides; the filler is Henry Cowell's Movement for String Quartet, which has been uploaded separately.

Piston's String Quartet No. 1 is in three movements:
