DESCRIPTION:
Copland: Two Pieces for String Quartet (1923-28)
Dorian String Quartet:
Alexander Cores, violin I
Harry Friedman, violin II
David Mankovitz, viola
Bernard Greenhouse, cello

Recorded February 8, 1940, in New York City, on Columbia 78-rpm matrices XCO 25937 and XCO 25938. Issued in the summer of the same year as Columbia Masterworks 70092-D; the record appears to have been deleted by 1943.

The two pieces are:
1. Lento molto, tranquillo legato
2. Rondino: Allegro moderato (at 4:30)

There is a cut of eight bars toward the end of the first piece (measures 73 to 80 of the published score), with slight alterations to the surrounding bars (72 and 81); it is unclear whether this was done to enable the piece to fit one side (about 22 seconds' worth of music are lost) or whether the published score represents a revised version of the piece. The score displays the copyright information at the bottom of the first page as follows: "New version..(orchestral)..Copyright 1940 by Arrow Music Press Inc.", and below that, "Original version Copyright 1948 by Arrow Music Press Inc." The first piece was composed in 1928; the Rondino in 1923.
