The Fugitive Kind (1959) - "Blanket Roll Blues" - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jan 18, 2010
DESCRIPTION:
Here it is a brief scene from the movie "The Fugitive Kind", 1959, directed by Sidney Lumet.

{*SPOILERS* (do not read if you wish to watch it):

Brando plays the role of a guitar playing drifter, Valentine Xavier (nicknamed "Snakeskin" due to his jacket), appearing out of the blue in a little town in the South of United States. His arrival revolutionates the roles and what were supposed to be morality rules of the local inhabitats, leading to fractures between the characters and a tragic epilogue.}

The cast, besides Brando, features a gorgeous Anna Magnani as Lady Torrance.
This wasn't one of the best movies Brando has ever worked into, according to critics, but his interpretation of "Blanket Roll Blues" is memorable: maybe one of the most beautiful scenes in the entire movie.
Enjoy.

Lyrics:
' Last night
I crossed the river
with a heavy blanket roll
I took nobody with me
not a soul

I took a few provisions
some for hunger, some for cold
but I took nobody with me
not a soul...'

{Trivia:
-"The Fugitive Kind" was a screen adaptation for the theatrical play "Orpheus Descending", by Tennessee Williams: it was in its origins a modern retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.The screenplay was written by Williams himself, in collaboration with Meade Roberts. Unfortunately, neither the play nor the movie could ever get rave reviews.

- You can listen to a modern version of "Blanket Roll Blues" on Scott Walker's album "Climate of Hunter" (1984). It's the last track, with Scott Walker singing and the well-known Mark Knopfler playing the guitar. }
