Rolling in the High - Trapeze performance by Anna Laurila (Autumn 2013) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Nov 01, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
This is dedicated to my dear Mother, who got strength after her surgery by thinking about my performance.
I had hard times too when I started to create this performance. I have been doing circus since I was 10 months old. When I am on the trapeze, it feels like this is my place, this is where I belong. It's a very emotial experiene to be there. Many times after training or performing I've even been moved to tears.

I started getting problems with my physique. I thought my dream would never be realized because my body was failing me. I took the safe step and I applied to be an elementary school teacher, because I love to teach circus to children so much. I got into university to study educational sciences. When moving to Jyväskylä and starting to study, it felt like something was missing. I guess I just had to go in another direction to realize, how important circus really is to me.

I thought I can't give up on something that important to me. I started to put all my effort to imrove the condition of my body and figure out what's wrong. Step by step I found more and more answers and still finding.

In spring 2012 I performed almost this same number to The Piano Guys' amazing instrumental version of Adele's Rolling in the Deep. I fell in love with the instrumental version.

I realized how powerful Adele's song, Rolling in the Deep, really is.

I realized, after my mother told me so, that while performing, I give a lot of positive energy to people. That is one of my strenghts and I wanted to do it even more.

Although Rolling in the Deep is a very powerful song, its lyrics are quite bitter and angry. "We would have have it all, Rolling in the Deep". I realized that people were singing the lyrics when they saw my performance, but those words were not the words I wished to convey from my heart.

I started to re-write the lyrics in my own positive way. I changed everything to positive.
For example: Original; " The scars of our love, they leave me breathless"
Anna-style; "The stars in my life, they keep me breathing."

Then I showed those lyrics to my friend Mea Karvonen and she helped me to make them better. Because Mea has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard, I asked her to sing the song. Amazing teamwork that truly became more than I thought it would be.

Then I wanted my own trapeze. I knew Jouni Kivimäki from Sorin Sirkus has made the best trapezes that I have ever tried. Soon I was at Sorin Sirkus watching how Jouni made my own trapeze. I chose all the elements and saw all the steps of building it.

I also realized that I don't have a good costume. I felt it should be with colours "magenta" and gold. Intuition lead me to Atelje Marina Kharina, Jyväskylä. We immediately connected and she created my costume. It was so much better than I thought it would be! My original plan was totally different, but together we made it better. We created the meaning for the costume; "Fire from my heart, from past to future."

The first filmed parts were from Iceland. Ívar Brand Hollanders asked me to teach circus in Iceland, Waldorfskólinn í Lækjarbotnum 7.6-24.6.2013 . There Ívar Brand Hollanders took two videos and photos of my new performance without audience. I'd also like to thank Illugi Örvar Sólveigarson for helping me to rig the Trapeze.

Then I met the Sirkus Magenta people, Silja Kyytinen and Sarah Hudson, when I went to train in Taitoliikuntakeskus with my trapeze. Silja asked me to teach circus the next day at Rööpeli-fest in Helsinki.
At Rööpeli fest I met Hanne-Mari Kauppinen who asked if I would like to go and do Social circus in Turkey with them.

Other parts have been filmed in Turkey 20.9- 1.10.2013 , Mardin, during an international social circus festival. It was EU's Youth in Action Youth Exchange project. The organisation in Turkey was Her Yerde Sanat; Art in Anywhere. The purpose was to bring the joy of circus for free into a place where circus is not practiced nor hardly any art.

So I want to thank the organisation Her Yerde Sanat, EU, rigger Frieda and others who made it possible to perform with Firetrack, Mika Koistinen, Hanne-Mari Kauppinen, MediaMario Vezza for filming, everyone who participated in the festival. It was one of my best experiences.

Then I got enough good video material for making the first version here in YouTube. One of my very good friend from high school, is studying editing now. One sunday we edited this video together. Because we were friends our collaboration worked smoothly and it was so amazing. Again it was more than I thought it could be.
