These songs were offered to Teresa Stratas by Weill's widow, Lotte Lenya, who sang Jenny in the 1931 production of Mahagonny. Following Stratas' remarkable portrayal of Jenny in the Met's 1979 production, Lenya stated that Stratas was "her dream Jenny" and proceeded to give her these songs of Weill which she had guarded since his death in 1950. Stratas performed them in concert at the Whitney Museum in New York on January 4, 1980.
