This comes from Matthew 12, where Jesus is telling the Pharisees that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. It's easy for me to teach my daughter to say the appropriate/polite/thoughtful thing at the right time- like tying apples onto a pear tree! However, it's a work of God to change little (and big) hearts to truly speak loving words out of the overflow of a loving heart, and breathtaking to see and hear when children (and big people) speak truth in love. It was a lot of fun playing with this idea for little ones- it's silly to pretend that one kind of tree bears another kind of fruit, right!? Jesus, change our hearts to bear good fruit.
