One day, my roommate woke me up and told me there was a man "jumping down from space". I spent the following hours watching Felix Baumgartner ascend into the stratosphere, before witnessing his survival of a record-breaking dive back to earth. Since then, I've never thought about dedication, humility, or the acceptance of fear in the same way.

Working on this production of "Gargantuan" was the most exciting endeavor of Mals Totem yet. Its composition is highly synergetic, with sections of the song having intimate rhythmic and harmonic relationships to each other. But most importantly, it was our most collaborative work at the time. Everyone was involved in the composition process in such a way that their personal input yielded results in the song's final incarnation.

The session was made especially unique by involvement of Susan Rogers (Prince, Barenaked Ladies) as producer, and George Massenburg (Earth, Wind & Fire, James Taylor) as lead engineer. The experience and wisdom they brought helped to coax the best out of us. And having our friend and producer, Raul Chirinos, in the control room reminded us that he had our backs by helping to translate the understanding of our sound to everyone else working on the track.
