Milestones is the title of two different compositions. The first is by pianist John Lewis who wrote it for trumpeter Miles Davis first recording as a leader in 1947. Lewis was so happy to be included in the session, which featured Davis mentor alto saxophonist Charlie Parker, that he presented the tune to Davis. In Visions of Jazz: The First Century Gary Giddins says, Milestones [was] a line with so many harmonic bottlenecks that Parker insisted hed play just the bridge because the tune was too hard for a country boy like him. From JazzStandards.com
He (ed. Miles Davis) played with (ed. Billy) Eckstine in 1946-1947 and was a member of Parker's group in 1947-1948, making his recording debut as a leader on a 1947 session that featured Parker, pianist John Lewis, bassist Nelson Boyd, and drummer Max Roach.
