Douglas Brian Heisholt 1951-2012

Doug was born and raised a Current River boy, only child of Morris and Josephine Heisholt. He attended Current River, Black Bay and Lakeview High schools. A Boy Scout through and through Doug attended Winnipeg at age 14 to receive scouting's highest honour, that of Queen's Scout (Canada Scout) and ever after Doug told us many stories of cross-country canoe voyages and lessons learned during his happy years in scouting. During high school he had summer work with CP Rail and proud of it too. Just out of his teens at age 20 fate brought him together with a little dark haired girl, Donna Rychekoski, also young. Their love was 'at first sight' and they married within the year. Three years later their son Jeffrey came along and with their two cats they had a very happy life indeed. He and Donna celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year at their winter nesting grounds on Salt Spring Island, B.C.

Doug's proudest accomplishment was their son Jeff. Anyone who knew Doug knew all about the latest things Jeff was doing in his music career, what rock and roll bands had stopped by to be fed, or what the latest news was from the music front.

A City of Thunder Bay firefighter for 31 years, the last ten years as Captain and Training Officer, Doug said he had the best job in the world, and especially loved the camaraderie and lifelong friendships of fellow firefighters. He truly loved the guys. He was always very grateful to be a firefighter.

Not one to be held down for long, Doug decided to take on a new endeavour after retirement and spent five years working with Dilico Child & Family Services as a Prime Care Worker. None of us was surprised when all the kids, families and workers came to love and value him as we all did. He felt he made a difference for at least a few of the terrific children he felt it was his honour to serve.

Doug always said he wouldn't change a thing about his life. If that means being a great husband, dad, friend and co-worker, having a big giving heart and being the funniest, most off-the-wall jokester ever, then no change would have made him more fulfilled.
