4 Ways to Read Ted Reed's Syncopation for Basic Jazz (Drumset) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Aug 25, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
I made this video for my buddy Ryan who's auditioning for his college jazz band and was asking for some advice on how to prepare. I'm not an active jazz player, but I used to play some and some of the first guidance I received from teachers was to play the exercises that I present here. At it's simplest: Play through the exercises in the book in the following four variations (of which there are many, many more possibilities):

#1. Read the notes on the kick drum
#2. Read the notes on the snare drum
#3. Short notes (8th notes) on the snare, long notes (quarter notes) on the kick
#4. Short notes on the kick, long notes on the snare

Once these are comfortable, you can add some dynamics and phrasing and such...

Apologies in advance for the lack of professional video / mic / equipment / etc - living in Japan I rent time at rehearsal studios and am limited by the gear that they provide.

Hope this is helpful!
