Born April 29, 1899, Duke Ellington was one of the most popular and influential figures of jazz and American music in general. As an artist he has influenced millions of people around the world and in his homeland. He was one of the most prolific American composers of the twentieth century. His career, spanning over 50 years, has seen him direct his legendary orchestra, a veritable breeding ground for extraordinary talent, as well as compose an inexhaustible songbook, which includes countless masterpieces and soundtracks for movies and musicals. Legend of the Cotton Club in Harlem, Ellington in 50 years has performed in over twenty thousand concerts, from America to Europe, from the Middle East to Asia. The "Duke" directed his orchestra from 1923 until the day of his death, March 24, 1974, at the age of 75.Since then the ensemble continued to perform under the lead of his son Mercer (until 1996), and later under Mercer's son, Paul Mercer. Until this day, under the direction of the pianist Tommy James and composed of a parterre of exceptional musicians (such as Mark Gross at the sax, James Zollar at the trumpet, David Gibson at the percussion or Hassan Ash-Shakur at the bass) the ensemble continues, after 91 years of uninterrupted activity, to play and promote worldwide the music of Ellington.
