Irving Berlin (born Israel Isidore Beilin, May 11, 1888 -- September 22, 1989) was an American composer and lyricist of Belarusian-Jewish origin (born near Mogilyov, Russian Empire, present-day Belarus). He immigrated to the USA with his parents to escape the anti-jewish persecution in Russia. His is a rags to riches story. He grew up in the US and through sheer hard work and determination became one of America's greatest composer and songwriter. He died in his sleep at the age of 101 years.

Always was written in 1925 as a gift to his wife on their wedding. The couple had to elope to get married because of strong objections from the wife's family. Their love lasted till her death in 1988 at the age of 85. This is the original waltz song.

Everything went wrong,
And the whole day long
I'd feel so blue.
For the longest while
I'd forget to smile,
Then I met you.
Now that my blue days have passed,
Now that I've found you at last -

I'll be loving you always
With a love that's true always.
When the things you've planned
Need a helping hand,
I will understand always.

Always.

Days may not be fair always,
That's when I'll be there always.
Not for just an hour,
Not for just a day,
Not for just a year,
But always.
