Mother has a long a wonderful friendship with the mighty Finnish label Fonal records going way back, almost to the start of Mother events, and to Shogan Kunitoki's gig in Strands restaurant. Since then I've gladly welcomed many acts from the label and proudly presented their touring showcase at Etablissemanget on one amazing Sunday evening that ranks amongst my favorite events ever. That night Lau Nau froze us all with her beautiful songs and I'm so glad she is coming back and together with the magical Islaja who has long been a Fonal favorite of mine.

This will be a very special night and a perfect return to the intimate setting of Hemliga Trädgården in Midsommarkransen (Johannesbergsgatan 6, Hägersten 126 35)

Do please OSA via motherfestival@gmail.com or by attending this event page oh and bring cash. 50kr entry

Big love to Rebecca Digby for the fantastically twisted poster, Pixel Palace for printing them and Hotel Hellsten Malmgård for their accommodation help

Islaja is Merja Kokkonen, a visual artist and musician living and working in Berlin, Germany. She has already played numerous large festivals including Eurosonic, by:Larm, Sonar, Itsenäisyysyö at the B2 club in Moscow, Russia and All Tomorrows Parties 2006 curated by Thurston Moore. Animal Collective invited Islaja to play a two week support tour with them in Europe. Islaja is also a member of Hertta Lussu Ässä, a free folk super trio with Lau Nau and Kuupuu.

"Islaja really does have a knack for emptying the world of familiar sounds and structures, taking us on a beautiful trek through her own scattered, darkening landscape."- Pitchfork

LAU NAU live at 21.30

Lau Nau is a moniker for the free spirited Finnish artist Laura Naukkarinen. Since the release of her celebrated debut full length album Kuutarha on Chicago's Locust Music in 2005, and the follow up Nukkuu (Locust, Fonal 2008), Lau Nau has enjoyed considerable recognition for her intimate and playful blend of ethnic tinged experimental folk songs. In recent years, her live shows have earned her a special place among a legion of fans. This was further cemented when a Lau Nau performance in Philadelphia was counted among The Wire magazine's "60 Concerts that shook the world" in its February, 2007 issue.

She is also known for playing live musical scores to silent films with Matti Bye ensemble, for example "Häxan" and "L'heureuse mort" in Castro Theatre, San Francisco Silent Film Festival. She has done music for Magnum photo, Daido Moriyama's exhibition, documentary films, tv-series and dance pieces. Recently Lau Nau has been active making sound installations. Naukkarinen has been an active presence in the Finnish underground for the last decade playing in groups like Kiila, Hertta Lussu Ässä, Päivänsäde, Avarus and the Anaksimandros, organizing concerts, publishing a magazine and running a handful of small labels starting with Winter cow, POK and, more recently, the Peippo label.

"Its spare, haunted, almost silent acoustic ambiance comes off like a Vashti Bunyan madrigal broken into tiny parts then rewoven with grass to create a new, wraithlike mosaic openly defying the original time-based narrative, and replacing it with an experimental drift just as cohesive as its original, pristine format."
