Guthrie Trapp & Josh Smith Guitar Clinic: Substitutions - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jul 20, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
Two Guitarists with one amazing Clinic. June 4th, 2016 Lava Cable welcomed Guthrie Trapp and Josh Smith to the Lava Sound Stage. Here is Guthrie Trapp explaining Substitutions.

5 to 1 sub, Meaning when you’re playing a E9 you can use Bm7 ideas and licks over that chord.

At 3:20 Guthrie talked about A Dominant 7. He is actually talking about a whole step back rather than a minor 3rd away(which is a 7b away) so he’s just using the A Dorian scale.
Guthrie basically says when you’re playing A dominant 7 you can use Gmaj7 over it, which is just A Dorian.

When he talks about playing Cmaj7 over Am he’s using the relative major chord of Am.
