STILLSUIT - HEARTBURN - Video
PUBLISHED:  Aug 07, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
Beginning in 1992, STILLSUIT (formerly Standoff) would carve out a style that would finely balance late 80's Hardcore Punk and the more avant sounds of the emerging 90'spost period. Perfectly executed on their 1995 7'' 'Green Spock Ears' - the material STILLSUIT laid down is fully realized - with drummer Dimi providing crashing grooves to the abstract chord progressions and melodic leads provided by Orlando and Manny, the guitar / bass dynamic would set the group apart from their peers, while singer Julian explored lyrical themes well beyond teen angst in a wild more manic and melodic Rollins vocal style.
In a period when most bands would abandon the 'fast song' STILLSUIT would be one of the few bands who would bring the gallop rhythm to new territories mixing Fugazi octaves, Helmet monolithic riffs and Sonic Youth feedback to a Hardcore Punk staple with songs like 'Last Chance' and 'Foot Pain'. While album opener 'Opposition' shows great style -coming on with a catchy melody switching between the vocals and guitar/bass- though the song itself has an unpredictability to it and doesn't succumb to a cliche structure while 'Heartburn' is nothing short of a kamikaze attack that leaves nothing in its wake.
STILLSUIT, under the production of iconic NYHC producer Don Fury would release the 'Green Spock Ears' Ep and a full length - 'At the Speed of Light' - both albums would see the band exploring NYHC Punk ideas and take them into the 1990's era with a creative style most bands are just now catching up to.
