Born in Suriname, pianist Ferial Karamat Ali started studying classical music at the age of six. She continued to develop her musical skills in the USA and since 1984 in Holland, where she began her career as a performing artist. On her journey through improvised music she developed a distinct fondness for Brazilian jazz. Currently, Ferial is performing with her trio, featuring Glenn Gaddum/Jeroen Vierdag on bass and Tim Dudek/Archie Peña on drums, with the Brazilian formation Sense Of Samba. She is a teacher of Brazilian and Fusion ensembles at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, performs workshops internationally, and is the musical director of Ray Blinker's Young, Gifted and Black project. The CD "Alvorada" with vocalist Ana Beck, Theo de Jong, Hein van de Geyn, Roy Dackus, Olaf Tarenskeen, and Leonardo Amuedo, among others, features Ferial's compositions.
