I.G.Y. (What A Beautiful World) - Donald Fagen (1982) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 17, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
"I.G.Y. (What A Beautiful World)" was a song written and performed by American songwriter, singer and musician Donald Fagen (born Donald Jay Fagen, January 10, 1948), best known as the co-founder, lead singer, and principal songwriter of the rock band Steely Dan (along with partner Walter Becker). It was the first track on his 1982 debut solo album "The Nightfly", and was released as a single, charting on the Billboard Hot 100, Mainstream Rock, Jazz, R&B and Adult Contemporary charts. The "I.G.Y." of the title refers to the International Geophysical Year, an event that actually ran from July 1957 to December 1958. The I.G.Y. was an international scientific project promoting collaboration among the world's scientists. Fagen's lyrics reference futuristic concepts such as solar-powered cities, a transatlantic tunnel, permanent space stations, and spandex jackets. "I.G.Y. (What A Beautiful World)" debuted on the Billboard Top 40 chart on October 30, 1982, eventually peaking at number 26. It also reached number 8 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart, number 17 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, and number 54 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart. It was Fagen's only solo Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was nominated for the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1983. "The Nightfly" was one of the first fully digital recordings of popular music. Although "The Nightfly" includes a number of production staff and musicians who had played on Steely Dan records, it is notably Fagen's first release without longtime collaborator Walter Becker. "The Nightfly" reached the #11 position on the U.S. Billboard album chart, and the #24 position on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, and was eventually certified platinum in America. It also received several 1983 Grammy Award nominations. This relatively low-key but long-lived popularity led the "Wall Street Journal" to dub the album "one of pop music's sneakiest masterpieces" in 2007.
