The Girl From Ipanema - Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicus de Moraes 1962 - Video
PUBLISHED:  Sep 05, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
"Tall and tan and young and lovely, the Girl from Ipanema goes walking..." A latin rhythm and Astrud Gilberto's sultry voice made this Antonio Carlos Jobim composition with lyrics by Vinicus de Moraes a world-wide hit in the mid-1960's. It won a Grammy in 1965 and gave rise to The Bossa Nova dance craze. The Bossa Nova is a well-known style of Brazilian music developed in the 1950's and '60's, that has since become a vital part of the standard jazz repertoire. The song was inspired by Heloisa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto, a beautiful 17-year old who strolled past the popular Veloso bar-cafe every day in Ipanema, a fashionable neighborhood in the southern region of the city of Rio Di Janeiro. The composers of the song were stunned by her beauty and amused by her oblivion to the male patrons of the bar who would whistle and call to her as she passed by. The 5' 8" brunette became a celebrity who continues to live in Ipanema as owner/operator of a boutique, "Garota de Ipanema" (Girl from Ipanema.) The Gayle Wilson Jazz Trio, based in Ashland, Oregon since 2001, does this song justice. Gayle Wilson, vocals, Dal Carver, piano, Jeff Addicott, bass.
