Ron Pope - White River Junction (Official Music Video) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Mar 11, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
“White River Junction” is the first song I wrote for this album and in my mind, it is the quickest route on the road to explaining “What does the new album sound like?” It’s a pretty vivid narrative; I saw a sign that said White River Junction when we were on tour in Vermont. I was sick and exhausted from months of non-stop traveling and anxious to get off the freezing bus at the next stop to get back on stage (which is the only place I ever want to be when we’re on tour). Every once in a while, on the road, I’ll look up how far we are from Atlanta even though I haven’t lived there in years; all I could think was, “Damn, we’re far from home.” There’s a great big stack of harmonies where each voice feels distinctive, something we absolutely and unapologetically have tried to steal from the Band. I love how clearly you can hear Andrew Pertes’ baritone rumbling on the bottom, because each voice is as important a part of the blend as all the rest. Our goal is to feel like a group of people all singing together to create one collective voice. The groove feels simple but is deceptively intricate, which is one of the things I’ve loved about Mike Riddleberger’s drumming since the first time I saw him, more than ten years ago. On the solo, you can hear the slide on my Les Paul wailing, along with Alex Brumel’s Tele playing the harmony lines. This tune has all the things I ever wanted to put into a song; you can hear just about everything that I love about music over those three minutes and fifty seconds.

Lyrics:
Words and Music by Ron Pope

White River Junction, way up north there someplace cold,
I could feel your heart beat, through your dress, I pull you close.
The sun's coming up real soon,
I don't know where we should go.
White River Junction, way up north,
Somewhere far away from home.

Last I recall, Chateau Marmont, it was 5 in the morning you were calling the cops, and I'd been awake, for a couple of days,
Cocaine, cocaine, cocaine.

You toed the line, while I drank my wine,
And spent all our money just biding my time,
Til you could escape, or til I passed away,
Cocaine, cocaine, cocaine.

(Chorus)

As the snow fell, Chelsea Hotel, on the sidewalk staring upwards until I was compelled to be on my way, only lies now remain,
Cocaine, cocaine, cocaine, cocaine, cocaine cocaine...
