Gilda Roy/Billy in the Lowground - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 27, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
Hank Bradley has been a noted player of Southern style fiddling in the Pacific Northwest since the 1960s. He also is an expert player of the music of Greece and the Balkans. He lives in Seattle, Washington. Hank says "'Gilda' is from John Morgan Salyer of Magoffin County KY, who made a series of home recordings in 1940 and 1941, which through the interest and diplomacy and generosity of Bruce Green have come to the rest of us. Salyer recorded a breakdown version of this, as well as the relaxed on that we play. 'Billy" is widespread among fiddlers. Ours is based on that of Leonard Rutherford of Kentucky, who recorded it with banjoist Dick Burnett. I do take a few liberties with his elegant phrasing." Hank has two CDs on the Sage Arts label, SA-1602, "Music of the Poison Coyote Kid," and SA-1601, "Hassle the Caller," www.sagearts.com. He also has recordings on other labels. He also has a book of fifteen of his original fiddle tunes, "Counterfeiting, Stealing and Cultural Plundering - a Manual for Applied Ethnomusicologists. Hank is backed up by Candy Goldman, banjo, and Bill Meyer, guitar. www.hankandcathie.com. Video by Phil Williams. www.voyagerrecords.com.
