Jaco Pastorius - Portrait Of Tracy by David Marion Bass Player - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jul 11, 2008
DESCRIPTION:
My very VERY humble tribute to the great Jaco Pastorius (1951-1987) and his beautiful masterpiece "Portrait of Tracy" , a real bass standard (alongside "Continuum") released on his self-titled debut album in 1976 produced by Blood, Sweat and Tears drummer Bobby Colomby, recorded at Camp Colomby Studios & Columbia Recording Studios C&B, New York City, New York, Label Epic/Legacy (Sony Music).

I just want to share my love for the tune with you...

And for the technical aspect of my recording, I plugged my 1973 fretted Fender Jazz BassĀ® direct into the computer using Quicktime Pro, rolled off the neck pickup, and added a little bit of delay...

The song is widely recorded as a tribute by bassists such as Joe Ferry, Marcus Miller, Brian Bromberg, and others. It is considered by many a bass guitar standard, and is often used as a benchmark for a bassist's abilities.

The song has been sampled as well, most notably, SWV's "Rain", Cannibal Ox's "Pigeon", Amon Tobin's "Daytrip", Chingy and Tyrese's "Pulling Me Back", Steve Spacek's "Hey There"and Hotstylz Faucet.

Don't forget, there is nothing better than listening to the original !!!

Peace,

David Marion Bass Player
