Brooklyn-based composer David Crowell’s music has been heralded for its “crystalline sonic beauty” (Boston Globe). As a woodwinds performer, he is a member of the Philip Glass Ensemble, having also played with the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Steve Reich, and the Bang on a Can Allstars. As a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Crowell has studied composition with Michael Gordon, David Lang, Julia Wolfe, Paul Caputo, and Jonathan Dawe. He writes the following:

"'Celestial Sphere' is an astronomical concept of observation that projects all images to be of equal distance from a single vantage point. While no astronomy expert, this concept immediately had emotional resonance for me as I was writing the music. Particularly in Section 1 (approximately the first six minutes of the piece), the listener feels as if they are right in the middle of the music, as
parts swirl around them; at first in the extreme left/right speakers, and then with additional parts
entering closer to the center of the panning spectrum. Creating a full auditory sphere enveloping
the ears, the music feels strongly three-dimensional.”
