Back in late August, Mr. Imanishi contacted me to see how my schedule was shaping up for the remaining part of the year. I was extremely excited, as our last collaboration took place over three years ago. Hayato sent me 'Ashura' in its entirety and--for the most part--gave me a choice as to which tunes to track. 'Ashura' is a fantastic record and you can grab it for free or pay what you'd like from the Cyclamen Bandcamp. The five tunes that I recorded will be released on a separate EP titled 'Humanise'.

Anyway, getting back to logistics - as usual, I was quite busy out of my home studio so we elected to do the tracks out of Anup Sastry's home studio, this session being my fourth from that particular locale. Hayato is mixing everything.

Upon hearing "Mugen-Houyou" (another tune that will comprise 'Humanise'), I was inspired to add a third tom-tom to my setup for this session and wrote parts bearing this inclusion in mind. (Fun fact: I actually played this kit setup for my first solo tune, "Pixieprog", back in '09 hah.) I also thought it'd be fun to incorporate a smaller 'stack' cymbal. Here are the kit specs: 8x10, 10x13, 16x16 Reference Pure tom-toms, 18x20 Vision kick, 6.5x14 Reference brass snare. Cymbals: 21" DRK ride, 19" BRT crash, 14" MDM hats, 14" ICON stacker/16" ALT china (larger 'stack'), 13" BRT/DRK hats, 18" BRT crash, 12" ICON china/10" BRT lightning splash (smaller 'stack'), 19" LTD china. Heads: Remo coated Emperor on tom-toms, Controlled Sound X on snare, coated Powerstroke 3 on kick.

Finally, thank you to Hayato and the rest of Cyclamen for the badass tee!

Notes:
0:18 - 0:21 - dual pedal hats complement guitar
0:59 - 1:02 - 3-16 rhythm superimposed on hi-hats
1:02 - 1:04 - kick/snare accent pattern roles are reversed
ending - the verse riff is played regularly for two repetitions, then double bass+dual stacks ramp up the energy into a crazy final repetition that sees me wedging fill-ins in between the rhythmic stabs
