DESCRIPTION:
Look, I SWEAR I’m not becoming some sort of noise channel here.

This is just a temporary thing, alright? I get that the lot of you are here are to listen to some dumb-ass music—and believe me, there’s PLENTY of dumb-ass rock music to come—but I imagine that some avid listeners are a tad bit disappointed to see that I’ve recently been covering things that aren’t... well, dumb-ass music. I’m sure the majority of you couldn’t give the slightest shit about whatever I do with this stupid channel, but considering my susceptibility to the vocal minority, I’ll go ahead and clarify that I’m going get back to the regularly-scheduled programming tomorrow afternoon. So don’t think that I’m going through a “noise-phase” or whatever, because I’d hate to have anyone go astray in order to check out one of the thousand other punk blogs on the internet. Y’know, the kind that’s got a stupidly-nihilistic/stupidly-cryptic page name and download links that lead to expired pages seventy-percent of the time. God-fucking-forbid. I just find certain things to be way-worth sharing, regardless of how much they may diverge from the rest of the music in the Jimmy-catalog.

Such a divergent band is Schoolgirl, an experimental noise group from Victoria, British Columbia, having formed approximately two years ago. Schoolgirl is the sort of band that I typically wouldn’t get within ten feet of: under normal circumstances, these sort of feedback-drenched, disgustingly rambunctious rhythms would be enough for me to cover my baby-ears and wish for something a little bit more savory. Yet, somehow, that’s wasn’t the case with this particular project. Something about the way this three-piece erratically projected their unadulterated, under-realized melodies ensnared my attention almost immediately, leading me to believe that this tape is something that I’d actually be interested in sharing onto my channel, in contempt of my otherwise-vanilla tastes. The problem was, I had no idea as to why I was so fascinated by sounds that are beyond my musical palate. To be honest, that’s a question that I’ve yet to find a concrete answer to. Regardless, I ended up agreeing to share this tape by the time I reached the third track, “Ism”. It wasn’t until I received a response from one of the group’s members that I partly-realized why Schoolgirl made for such an unprecedented first listen.

I’m sure this comes as a surprise to no one, but Schoolgirl’s music is completely improvised—I’m sure it also comes as a surprise to no one when I say that I, as a relative-stranger to noise-oriented projects, completely failed to assume that’d be the case. The way I initially heard it, I thought that the band was just making use out of deliberately-abnormal songwriting. But no: Schoolgirl, in both their live and recorded formats, completely improvise their performances, as they supposedly thrive on spontaneity, rarely play music together outside of recording sessions and shows as a result. I honestly find that to be rather impressive, as even without their lack of preparation and rehearsed compositions, Schoolgirl’s music still manages to be cohesive and digestible, retaining some sense of structure to what is essentially a free-formed discharge of noise. After getting word of that fragment of information, I immediately shifted my perception on the group’s music and, surprisingly, found myself enjoying their efforts even more than I did to begin with. Prior to Schoolgirl, the majority of other improvised noise acts I encountered were geared more towards producing jittery bouts of sounds, rarely resembling anything that could be mistaken as the forms of music that they drew their inspiration from. Schoolgirl, on the other hand, is a project that I honestly find to be sonically appealing. Despite their lack of pre-meditated coordination, Schoolgirl is still calculated and intense, being composed of deliberate auditory imperfections that somehow amalgamate into engaging compositions made up of scratchy roars, limp guitar work, and nomadic drum abuse. It’s not a gimmick, it’s not some arthouse bullshit, and it’s definitely not some pretentious dickheads playing around with rock instruments and pedals for an unfortunate amount of time. It’s the real fucking deal, and it hits like a goddamn truck. Give Schoolgirl a chance and try your best to make sense out of someone else’s madness.
